Army ski club spreads its net

With the ski season just around the corner (hurry up and snow!), the Waiouru Alpine and Ski club is gearing up to foster skiing within the Waiouru community. An AGM will be held on 2 May to decide the direction the club should take and input from prospective members is vital, said club president Steve Newman. "People have got to provide help. People will have to identify where they can help the club," he said. Unlike in the past, the club is now opening its doors to personnel both military and civilian as well as their dependants. People working within the Waiouru community, for example teachers and Serco personnel, will also be entitled to join. Mr Newman said the reasoning behind this was simple. Soldiers are fully committed to their work and the club needs part-
ners and families to become involved in the management side of things to make it a club as opposed to a ticketing agency. "People have got to understand, to be a member of the club they have to accept some responsibilities," he said. A lot of people can't commit themselves to club activities for the whole season, but Mr Newman said this is fine. Many club tasks can be shared among club members to relieve the burden, he said. The club's aim is to provide cheap hire on a range of quality ski equipment. "People can be quite assured they will get a safe ski," said Mr Newman. He said some of the ideas up for discussion at the AGM include designing a club logo and establishing a permanent base somewhere near the mountain. Mr Newman said ideas that get people out and skiing would be welcomed.
