Marae fire

At about 9.00 pm Tuesday 4 April 1995 the Ohakune Volunteer Fire Brigade were called to a suspicious fire at the Maungarongo Marae, Burns Street, Ohakune. A small storage shed at the marae was extensively damaged.

Police said that on investigation it was determined that two children aged 8 and 11 years, who live at the marae had caused the fire playing with matches some hours earlier in the building. Authorities at the marae are now taking whatever action that they deem prudent and the police will have no further involvement, reported the police.
