Wool pressing joins line-up of pub entertainment

Ruapehu Hotel played host once again to Waimarino Shears with their wool pressing competition last Saturday. It was slow at first with competitors coming forward to enter, but following the rugby, things certainly got under way and crowd support was full to overflowing. Duncan Metekingi was M.C. "Sweat until you can't sweat no more", may well have been an appropriate theme song for the competitors, because "sweat" they certainly did. The wool presser's job is full on, hard work and all go with full packs weighing in at approximately 170kg. Judges look at weight, well secured packs with a clean and tidy area. Pressing results: Singles; 1st Rau 13.51; 2nd Nick 14.91; 3rd Mike 15.09. Doubles: 1st Shannon and Lana 10. 15; 2nd Macky and Nick 9.05; 3rd George and Boma 11.01. Prize winners; Jason Taiaroa quality shield; Pete and Hone no penalties (T Shirts); Paul Brown youngest tryer $10; Barry Rawiri best local old timer $10; Mike Price only 170kg (T Shirt); Boma Prince $10; Jacky boy $10; Gonks $10; Lana $10. Sponsors Mannell & Follick, Sue Joe, Glady Goldfinch, Jim Pearce, Arvell Wallace, Ruapehu Hotel.
