Ruapehu asked to fund Spriggins Park showers
Waimarino passed the ball straight to- the Ruapehu District Council last Thursday when asked to support an application for about $10,500 towards the cost of the rebuilding of the Spriggins Park, Wanganui, rugby shower block. Community Board members told Wanganui Rugby Union representatives Bill Harding and Royce Tunbridge that they doubted if there was any money available for such a grant. However, they agreed to refer the matter to the council to find out if any such funds were available. Mr Harding told the board the union was rebuilding the shower block after the grandstand there was burned down last year. He said it was only the country clubs such as Waiouru, Raetihi and Ohakune Karioi that used the showers. The Wanganui District Council was puttingup $65,000
towards the rebuilding and the union was seeking a further $35,000 from Rangitikei, Ruapehu and South Taranaki. The board asked what happened when city clubs visited the country clubs, and was told they provide facilities. They also suggested the union ask the sub-unions for assistance. Mr Harding had suggested the funding come from reserves contributions but was told that those funds must be spent in the areas they are collected. He said although the project was outside the district it would be used by local club members, Board chairman Colin Webb said such a grant would set a precedent that could lead to many claims as Wanganui was the base for a lot of other sports. The grant would amount to about $240 per Ruapehu player.
