How much you pay
Although Ruapehu District Council rates revenue will increase by about six per cent across the board, the effect on individual ratepayers will vary greatly. The council has struck one general rate and scrapped its separate northern and southern roading rates. Changes to the charges for services also has a marked effect with most increasing dramatically. For example, Ohakune' s sewerage charge is up from $37 to $73, water is up from $207 to $267, and refuse is up from $41 to $50. Raetihi' s water charges increase from $107 to $1 12, sewerage from $140 to $152, and refuse from $41 to $50. The effect of this is that in general rural ratepayers will see a slight decrease in their total rates bill while urban ratepayers will see rises. Examples(based on land value): An Ohakune urban rate payer whose land is worth $14,000 will pay $825, $101 morethan'94 (ariseof 14%). An Ohakune rural property worth $430,000 will see a
$116 drop in their rates (down 2.3%). Rates on a Raetihi section valued at $8000 will be $24 more (3.6%). Rates on a Raetihi rural property valued at $105,000 will drop by $28 (down 1.9%). Waiouru properties valued at $9000 in the urban area will pay $33 more (up 4.9%), while a rural property worth $590,000 will pay $588 less (down 7.3%). By comparison with the north, a Taumarunui urban property, land value $10,800, will be billed $57 more (up 6.2%) and a rural property, land value $220,000, will pay $136 more (up 5.7%). The draft annual plan is open to submissions and goes back to the district council for final approval in May.
