Lions promise to finish playground soon
Work on the Christie Park playground, stalled since before Christmas, should start moving again, says the voluntary organisation that has taken on the task of setting up the equipment. A sliding rail and swing are still to be erected, then bark spread under the equipment for safety. Ruapehu Lions took on the job, after the local Plunket group raised funds and lobbied the Ruapehu District Council for funding assistance, then worked on the design and purchase of the equipment.
Lions spokesman Mike Fetzer said the club had hoped to have the project completed long before now but that they had been extremely busy with other projects such as the building of the Tangiwai Memorial toilets. "It' s been a manpower problem. We need two or three guys including a builder on the job (Christie Park) and we haven't been able to coordinate it yet," he said. "We've been over committed." He stressed that the Lions is a voluntary service organiTurn to Page 2

On Friday Mr Fetzer said they hoped to finish the work on the weekend, 25-26 March, but that if that didn't happen they would work on it this coming weekend. There has been some concem expressed that the equipment already set up is dangerous as it is higher off the ground than is specified and no safety surface, such as bark, has been laid. Asked why the bark could not be spread under the equipment that is already erected to make it safer for children, Mr Fetzer said that it would be difficult to do the concreting work on the last pieces with bark layed out. Mr Fetzer said the club was open to offers of help, especially from parents of children who would use the park, to get the project completed. i
