Athletics & interviews for College

By Ruapehu College pupil Lee McCann Ruapehu College has been a centre of activity the past fortnight with parent-teacher interviews and representative athletics. Parent-teacher interviews were held at the Ruapehu College on 9 March to assess pupils' performances. Though the evening proved long for teachers, it was very successful compared to previous years which indicated that more parents are showing an interest in their children' s education. The night was based on logbook comments and the year's new logbooks for students. A log book is used to record homework and results. Parents are asked to sign the logbook once

a week when homework has been completed. On Wednesday 15 March a group of representatives from Ruapehu College travelled to Wanganui to compete in an inter-school athletics competition Ruapehu College students gained many pleasing results with Charmian Oh coming first in the intermediate girls' 100 and 200 metres, and a third place in the triple jump. Angela Reuben threw an excellent 19.94 metres in discus and also gained second place in shotput for junior girls. John Hays was second in the intermediate boys high jump of 1.75 metres, who competed against ex Ruapehu student Jamie Morrissey. John also got third place in discus and triple jump. Both were personal bests. He also came third in hurdles. Justin Mackay missed by a

nose in the intermediate boy's 800 metres, coming second. Andrew Murdie was second in the 3000 metres intermediate boys' event. Ei Leen Voon was placed second in Junior Girls' triple jump. Tania Clark was second and Denise Waerea third in the senior girls triple jump. Ruapehu College' s highlight of the day was seeing Jason Waerea competing in the hurdles. He jumped three, knocked one down and decided to run around the remaining hurdles. The pupils enjoyed themselves and showed good support and sportsmanship. A special thanks went to Mrs Campbell from the college for her encouragement and commitment towards the pupils of Ruapehu College.
