Aussies march on Waiouru

By

Monaghan

Waiouru people had a chance to see a parade with a difference last week. Thirty eight Australians temporarily held up traffic on SH49 as they marched to the Waiouru Returned Services Association from the railway station. The Australians were mainly from Newcastle, where they have formed a group called The Australian Armed Forces Reenactment Heritage Unit. The unit performed the 'Beating of the Retreat' just before 5.00pm, and complete with bugler, the RSA flag was lowered.

President of the unit, Harry Matthew, said the aim of the group was to preserve the history and heritage of the old Australian Imperial Forces. The re-enactment unit dress in the uniforms of the Tokyo Palace Guards and performed drill with the .303 rifle, the standard weapon for the Anzactroops from the beginning of the century until around 1950, said Mr Matthew. The group came to New Zealand to commemorate the 50th anniversary of T Force (Japan). They performed services in Wellington, Wanganui, Palmerston North and Waiouru.
