FROMPAGE9 traditional manner. Barrell racing - This event, for cowgirls only means that the competitor must ride around three barrells which are placed in a clover-leaf fashion. The event is against the clock. Bull ride - As the bulls are fully-grown, they are of course more cunning and more difficult to ride than steers. Bull fighters are involved in this event, their job is to keep the riders safe and to provide distraction for the bull. The rider must get off the bull in eight seconds and it is then that the bull fighter distracts the bull away from the rider. Saddle bronco ride - This event has much to do with style and correct

technique. The rider must spur in time with the horse, his feet must.be forward of the break of the shoulder for the first jump out. Sunday's competition is for all riders who have not yet qualified for the open grade competition. That is to say they have not gained their 2000 points. Events for local riders are open to those competitors who live within the local area - defined as follows - The Whanganui River, Kakatahi, Irirangi, Waiouru and as far north as National Park. Children's events Children's events are included in Sunday's programme. There will be calf-riding for all ages however, those children under 10 years must have their parent's permission. Sheep un-decorating - Children will run and pull

the ribbon off the sheep in the fastest time. Steer un-decorating - A Hazer will guide the steer out of the chute running straight. The rider must then aim at pulling off the ribbon. Extra steer event This is the first year of running. It is a steer event for local riders only. During the weekend the Raetihi School fundraising group will look after the gate. The committee is trying a new idea, offering a family concession pass, two adults and two children both days $20. Refreshments will be available and will include a sausage sizzle, steak sandwiches and an evening meal (at a cost of $5). The evening meal includes, mutton on a spit and salad. The sandwich and meal tickets will have

a lucky number draw for an Easter basket. The organisers are very much indebted to the Waimarino sponsors, for their assistance and support in prize-money, especially to the graziers and stock lenders and to the carrier companies. Also to the Order of St John who will be present with an ambulance on stand-by. It is important that all stock are well cared for. Rodeo rules stipulate that a veterinarian inspects all stock before and after the competition. This area is lucky to find stock from within the district which otherwise would be a costly exercise. "Yee ||al" time

FROMPAGE 10 Waimarino is the oldest continuous running Rodeo in New Zealand and this will be their 45th year. The committee is looking forward to celebrating 50 years in the year 2000.

Rodeo, being rural, usually involves small towns. The rodeo committee therefore provided the following to remind you, in case you'd forgotten, what your life is like. (Here's hoping we got the news right! - Editor).
