Steam and champagne to mix
Champagne and steam will combine on 'Carnival of Wheels' weekend, 24-26 March, when Main Trunk Rail Ohakune is planning special steam train trips to Horopito from Ohakune. A steam engine built in 1 872, F1 63, will haul the vintage carriages of the train. Before the champagne and nibbles trips, a children' § train trip will be run on Friday 24 March, to Horopito and back. Organised through the primary schools, the cost is $3 with an apple for each child thrown in by ENZA, to promote healthy eating. Two trips are planned for the Saturday afternoon and evening.
At 3pm a trip leaves for Horopito and the vintage car museum. For $18 per head, passengers can enjoy the ride as well as bubbly and nibbles. Return to Ohakune is approximately 5pm. At 6pm the Twilight Champagne Run to Horopito boards. Same conditions as the 3pm trip. On Sunday 26 March, a family day on the railway is planned, with trips on the hour to the Hapuawhenua Viaduct behindF163. Also planned for later in the year is a double headed Ka class steam engine trip, for 13 & 14 May. This is to be Ka 495 's last trip for some time as it is due for a major overhaul.
