Tongariro scene of race

A'eream of the crop' multi-sport event, the Tongariro Mountain Classic is on again 25 March 1995. The race which covers Tongariro National Park's finest scenery, wildest rivers and rugged terrain, annually attracts top New Zealand names in multi-sport events. The race starts with the cycle from the Turangi town centre at 7am on Saturday 25 March. All competitors will be awarded a certificate of completion, a race T-shirt and a post-race feast. One - Road bike section of 35.5km starting in Turangi, heads o ver Te Ponanga Saddle, to the Mangatepopo road end. Stage Two - A challenging run of 23km over Mt Tongariro from Mangatepopo to Ketetahi road end. Stage Three - A 15km cycle from Ketetahi to Poutu Bridge on State Highway One. Then a

2.5km run to Blue Pool on the Tongariro River. Stage Four - A 1 5km kayak down the river to Lake Taupo, a 5km kayak across the lake and up the Tokaanu Tailrace to the road bridge (paddlers can change kayaks at SH 1 bridge in Turangi). Stage Five - A 4km run back to finish in Turangi.
