Even though Wednesday 1 March was a dismal day for the Ruapehu College Athletic Sports, many fine athletes turned out in force. The PTA again set up its hot food tent and on this particular day it was very welcome. A new event this year was the 100 metres hurdles which brought lots of participation and entertainment despite the elastic nature of the hurdles. Other popular events of the day were, as in previous years, the inter-whanau relays which reduced the school to a frenzy of excitement. Athletic Records Many new records were set this year. George Taura ran the senior boys 100-metre sprint in the record-breaking time of 11.35 seconds. Intermediate high jumper John Hays broke S Grossart's 1991 record with a jump of 1.75 metres. Three triple jump records were broken: the intermediate boys' by Raymond Hemopo (11.92m); the senior girls' by Tania Clarke (10.2m); and the junior girls' by Donna Cranston (9.23m). These records had been previously held by M Patterson, C Hinana and N Cast respectively. Although the sports ended with several events still to be run and with individual champions and inter-whanau results still to be announced, the general consensus was that the day had been very successful. At the moment Kiwi Whanau is coming first, closely followed by Tui, then Weka and finally Huia. Form 3 Camp Third form camps held over a period of two weeks starting from 13 February were run with the idea of getting third formers to meet new people since the college draws students from
our four local towns. This year along with staff going out to meet the new arrivals, were some senior students lucky enough to help out with activities such as trust games, community service which involved Spreading lucerne for the Department of Conservation and a trampto Lake Surprise. Gymkhana Karioi Domain was the venue for this year's annual Inter-School Gymkhana held on 27 February. Many schools around the region came to compete in events which varied from show jumping to bending to rider events. First was Reporoa College, followed by Taumarunui High School and Ruapehu College in third place. With a high level of student participation it must have been the highlight of the week for those who took part.
