Visiting golfers swing it for charity

A charity golf tournament held recently at the Waimarino Golf Club saw some great golf as well as generous donations made to two of the Waimarino's local organisations. Both the St Johns Church Hall Restoration Fund and the Waimarino Branch of the Cancer Society received $ 1 766.50 from the event. The Waimarino Cancer Society has recently received a commendation from Palmerston North Hospital, who are amazed at the level of support offered to patients in the Waimarino region. Presentation of the oversize cheques was made to representatives of each committee at Cleches Bar on Thurs-

day afternoon, 23 February. The Ohakune Hotel Charity Sports Foundation was the major sponsor of the event along with local businesses John Mcllroy Plumbers and Beedee's Coffee Shop. Local retailers also supported the event with various prizes. The tournament attracted 118 players, from as far as Palmerston North, Foxton, Taupo & Whakatane, with local restaurateur Franz Brandl hitting a hole-in-one and Gary Creedy coming in just one shot off the all-time course record, with a round of 66. Such was the success of the tournament, the organisers are hoping to see it become an annual event.
