Waiouru garden winners
By Michele Monaghan Waiouru' s Cariappa shield, presented to Waiouru' s finest gardens, was this year awarded to Lyn and Paul Lumsden. Second place went to Lesley and John Sole and third place
was awarded to Michelle and Tongia Webster. The Cariappa Shield was first presented in 1956 in an effort to improve the gardens of Waiouru, and has been presented each year since. Previously gardens
for the competition were selected by housing office staff, but this year it was left up to individuals to enter. Consequently entry numbers were down on past years . Next year neighbours and friends will be able to
enter other people' s gardens in the competition. As a spin off, Weir Terrace Kindergarten ran a tour of the top gardens as a fundraiser. People who went on the tour said they were impressed by the variety and standard of the gardens. 'They were beautiful," said Waiouru resident Jill Webb. "Unfortunately they were two or three weeks past their.best, and a terribly strong wind gave the poor gardens a bit of a battering." Despite this Mrs Webb said she enjoyed the garden tour. "Everything's so different. Everyone's different, different tastes, different plants," she said.
