Dahlia day
Ohakune Garden Club members who organised Saturday ' s fifth annual dahlia show took a well-earned rest once the show opened to the public, saying they were worn out from setting up the benches, weighed down with a record number of entries. "Why do we have a dahlia show? Well, sometimes we wonder," said oneof the organisingteam, CynthiaDowsett. Despite the weather conditions, the blooms were of good quality, they said. And the range of blooms was staggering, rivalling a city style show. Early frosts knocked them back, meaning the show was a bit later than usual, and the heavy rain on Friday caused a bit of concern but most people managed to pick their flowers before any damage was done. Judges for the event were Barbara Brown and Norma Cranston. Organisers were Sheryl Wilson, Cynthia Dowsett, Lorraine Taylor and Maureen Warren. The club thanked supporters Benchmark, Williams & Kettle, Kunikraft, Frank Taylor Holdings, Ruapehu Gardens, Ron Frew Family Partnership, and Ohakune New World for their generosity.
