Wet weather clears for dog trials

The Raetihi Collie Club's 73rd annual dog trials commenced its competition on Friday 24 February in rather wet conditions, but the weekend made amends with competitors and their dogs in good heart. The venue for this year' s trials were that of Neil Wiggin' s and Willie Chan's Parapara properties. Competitors aim to qualify for the nationals. A win gains 5 points with a total of 6 to qualify all up. I caught up with John Journeaux whose dog Tyke was entered in the class 1 long head and pull to ring event which has a timing of 14 minutes. In this event the aim is to call the dog to bring the sheep in as straight a line as possible with a steady walking pace, and as John indicated it can be quite a test of nerves, his dog Tyke, is 'still fairly raw', this being his first season out. Other events included class 2 short head and yard, class 3 zig zag event and class 4 huntaway, straight hunt.
