Traffic islands for Ohakune

Traffic islands have been installed on Miro Street, Ohakune, at the intersections with Ayr Street and Shannon Street. All traffic entering these intersections are required to give way to traffic al-

ready in the intersection. The two intersections have been the scene of many vehicle crashes over the years some including fatalities. The Ruapehu District Council expects that the works will reduce

the number of crashes at the intersections in future. Local drivers who have been accustomed to the previous layout will need to take particular care at these intersections until they become used to the new environment, advises the council. An intersection island has been placed at the junction of State Highway 49 and Raetihi-Ohakune Road at Ohakune. This island is used to protect an additional Give Way sign to reinforce the message for motorists to give way when travelling on the Raetihi-Ohakune Road.
