Councillors grant themselves pay rise

Ruapehu councillors voted to give themselves a five per cent pay rise at their meeting last Friday. The pay rise comes into effect on 1 July 1995, after the Minister of Local Government determined that maximum salaries could rise by up to fxve percent. The council has chosen to pay itself the maximum allowable for a district of its size. Rates of pay are: Mayor $42,000 with no meeting allowances; deputy mayor $ 1 0,500 with a $90 meeting allowance; councillor $3150 plus $90 for meetings; community board chair $2625 plus $52.50 per meeting; community board member $525 plus $52.50 per meeting. In moving the motion Cr Shaw said the rise was "so small that no one

should make a fuss." Cr Weston Kirton said it was customary for the new council (which would be elected in October) to make the decision on salaries. Cr Eddie Turley said in support of the rise that it was always possible for councillors who did not agree with the remuneration set down, to claim a lesser amount. Councillors Kirton, Peck, Compton and Murphy voted against the pay rise and asked that their votes be recorded.
