Waimarino A&P Show gone urban?

In regard to the recent Waimarino A&P show, it is with grave disappointment that a rural community has 'lost the plot' of what the term 'Agriculture & Pastoral' is truly about. What has happened to the days that with great pride the Grand Parade is led by the Grand Champion Bull and owners of outstanding livestock proudly present their prize animals? Where are all the children like Holly , who would delight the crowd showing their pets, lambs, calves etc? How about farm machinery, this section replaced by late model cars and a ride-on lawn mower, this represents urban society does it not? A comment reported in the Bulletin recently suggested Jerry Cornelius is the top horseman, not just in this area, but in the country, and as he was present at the show, what a shame it was that we weren't privileged to see this local talent in action. If one wasn't standing by the roadside fence to witness the passing of the Ulysses Motorcycle Glub, who make the effort to fund raise for the community, and were superseded by this presentation of the freedom of the district to the 4th Logistic Regiment (does everyone know exactly what that entitlement means?) you could have been excused for wondering if they had returned at all this year.

What a shame they were not given the showground to display their bikes but, more importantly for the community, to thank them for their efforts. How often do we hear, and not always by the older generation, "things just aren't what they used to be"

EDITOR'S NOTE: The Bulletin has been advised that New Zealand's top horseman, as voted by Jim Davis (see Bulletin 14 February), is now known as Jerry Creedmore, having changed his name by deed poll some years ago. We also understand Mr Creedmore is flattered by the accolade, but is wondering when he will receive the trophy ! We could also comment on the (minor) point about ride-on mowers — how many urban people could justify the expense of such a mower. Surely they are mostly used by rural people?
