Sun shines on the parade

Two or three years ago they ordered a perfect day for the Waimarino Agricultural and Pastoral Show and this year it arrived. Crystal clear skies set the scene for a successful show for 1995, with gate takings up by about $500 to more than $1 500 for a relaxed, easy going day. The main part of the day was the charter parade for the presentation of the Freedom of the District to the 4th Logistic Regiment which consisted of a march past and inspection of the troops by the mayor, Garrick Workman along with speeches. Not many envied the soldier's lot, on parade in uniform in ,the 25°C-plus heat, but most appreciated the short but entertaining performance by the New Zealand Army Band, complete with trick marching and a haka. Entries in the horse events — the mainstay of the Waimarino show — were up on previous years. The grand parade caught a few by surprise and was unfortunately a disjointed effort. Nincom the Clown provided roaming entertainment on stilts, and later a show in the stand where he kept a large crowd of young ones entertained while managing to keep under control two or three young boys who thought it humourous to waltz back and forth in front of the performer. This year's agricultural section of the show provided a more-than-colourful display of flowers and vegetables and the creative input of the local schools provided a very high standard, with the children encouraged to express in "free flow

mode". The results were pleasing, said organisers, with the ever-popular sand saucers. Cooking and handcraft also saw pleasing results with encouragement for local groups to continue in the same vein. Major results: Ohakune Womens Division Federated Farmers Perpetual Challenge Cup, 1st J Seaman, Raetihi, most points. GHI Childrens Agricultural Cup, Gordon Patterson. Garden cup trophy; Lynley Graham, Ruatiti. Agriculture, W Fulton, Memorial cup. Lynley Graham, most points veges. Civic pride garden competition, judged from the street; 1st B & J Ratima, 2nd M & D Hemapo, 3rd M & J Sommerville. D Section gladioli (informal) 1 large spike, 1st Millie Waara, 2nd Gwen Martin, 3rd TinaHansen. ChampionBloom Millie Waara. Old bikers ride by At the invitation of the Waimarino Rest Home Trust, the Ulysses Motorcycle Club timed a visit and fund raising effort with Show Day. This year, due to the Charter Parade the cyclists rode up the main street and looped the town finishing with a ride along the front entrances of the show grounds. The evening's entertainment included a culture performance and karaoke at the Waimarino Club. Faith Wise, Ian and Ngaire Stewart, the club' s local organisers, were more than pleased with this year's efforts, with many comments from the visitors of "we will be back".
