Speed shears brings in out-of-towners

This year's speed shearing show held at the Ruapehu Hotel, Raetihi, saw some 22 entrants, with some contestants coming from out of town including Aaron and Haydon Te Huia from Marton and Nigel Brown Brown form Taupo. This then was a bit of a challenge and inspired locals to enter. Times were very competitive, with some losing points only when judges considered their quality. This year's judges were also from our side of the district. They were, Steve Cochrane, T aumarunui, and Dean Te Huia, Marton, both official Wool Board judges. Local organisers are keen to see the competition continue and were pleased with the support shown on the night. There was a delay between round 1 and 2 and a funny side to the story. The lambs came from Colin Hammond's property and, due to the rain, organisers had to go back to

Colin' s to get the "second lot". Well, first up, the boys ran out of petrol, then finally, when they got "those little woolly critters" loaded up, off the boys go down Colin' s drive and three lambs managed to break loose from the pen. Imagine chasing three lambs in the pouring rain. Winners 1st overall Jackie Pue 35.68 $300, 2nd Ronnie Jensen 35.92 $200, 3rd Nigel Brown Taupo 36.38 $100. All competitors were treated to a beer pack as were the judges. Jimmy Edmonds was this year's organiser with many of his family and friends in support. Thanks go to the sponsors, Ruapehu Hotel, R.B. Lilburn, Colin Hammond, Kui & Griffin, Edward Taura and Robert Brown. There were 22 competitors in the 1st round with 1 9 in the finals. Preparations are in hand for this week's Waimarino Shears to be held at the showgrounds on Sunday.
