Waimarino Riding Club

The North Island team event this year was hosted by the Pio Pio and Otorohanga Clubs on the Pio Pio Domain and adjoining properties. The weather was almost too good, being hot and sunny all the time. Seventeen teams partici-

pated from all over the North Island from Auckland to Wellington and Opunake to Hastings. As usual the standard of turnout was high and the quadrille costumes were eye catching and varied and showed a lot of imagination. The Waimarino team of Christine Tarrant, Joanne Marama, Jenny Mottram, Evelyn and Heather Cooper had mixed success, their best showing being 6th in the cross country phase. Their expectations had not been high with a mixed team of two young horses, one elderly horse and two borrowed horses. Old Rajah at

32 years old was a delight to see — he positively glowed and acted as though for the whole of his life he had been waiting for this moment and loved every minute of it! The quadrille theme was "Safari" to the Lion King music and the horses portrayed a hyena (Rajah) zebra(Seika), whiterhino (Silver) and elephant (Buddy). It was amazing what the horses would take in their stride. The cross country course had options all round the course and the show jumping offered a good gamble, deciding which six jumps to take on. The winning team was the Coastal Riding Club "Buttons and Bows" from Opunake and incidentally their second team won the 'last but not least trophy' — keeping it in the family. They have kindly volunteered to run the event next year in their district assuring competitors of yet another new venue which is always fun. Tuesday 3 1 January was the club's last social meeting when NITE photos were shown and arrangements discussed for the national horse management exam in Taupo on 1 1 February with a riding and examiners seminar the next day. Two ' treks were organised for Sunday 5 February and Sunday 26 February and all Riding Club members are welcome to participate.
