What is Maori Women's Support?
"No, we are not a women's liberation movement — what we are is a group of concerned Maori mothers who are trying to build towards a wider network of support for all mothers within our community," states Denise Perkins in her introduction to the group. She said the community has a vast majority of women, young and old, who remain oblivious to certain aspects of life, "therefore believing that their only sanctuary is within their (own) four walls". "Our aim is to generate a feeling of self esteem among our womenfolk by introducing advice, support and training in areas pertaining to our everyday lives." She said they need the support of other women in the community who have the skills and experience necessary and are prepared to assist in the venture. "We have a high rate of domestic abuse and crime in our community due to a lack of essential resources and support." "So let us build towards a safer and more productive community and, yes!, it must start now!" For further information contact Denise, 06-385-4474.
