River resting place for crashed cars

Mangawhero Stream was the resting place for two cars involved in separate car accidents on the weekend. At 5.20am on Saturday morning police, fire and ambulance services were called to an accident on

Mangawhero Terrace where a red Toyota Hi-Lux ute flipped into the stream, trapping two of the three local men who were travelling in it at the time. One of the men suffered minor injuries while the other two suffered serious

chest injuries. They were taken to Wanganui Hospital for treatment where they are reported to be in a stable condition. Constable Stuart Ngati said the men who had to be rescued were very lucky in that the water level in the

stream was very low, only ankle deep. He said they could easily have drowned had the water been higher. Police are investigating drink-dri ving charges relating to the incident. At approximately 5.55pm on Sunday evening

emergency services were called to an accident near the Tohunga Road bridge at the northern end of Clyde Street. A white Mazda car had flipped into the stream after the driver lost control on the bend. The car had hit the barrier on the opposite side of the road then skidded across the road and down the bank. The father and son occupants of the car were only slightly injured, but were taken to Waimarino Hospital suffering from shock. The car was extensively damaged. The pair, from Auckland, were on their way to a canoeing trip, when the car capsize happened. Mr Ngati said they too were very lucky that the river level was so low. Party burglary A Carters Terrace resident was woken Sunday morning to be asked by his young son where abouts the television was. He got out of bed to find the house had been burgled. Stolen were electrical goods including the television, stereo and groceries. There had been a party at the house on Saturday night.
