The Taupo District Council and Cam-bridge-based business consultant, John Ryan recently received the Tongariro Taupo Conservation Award presented by the Department of Conservation, The awards were presented in a ceremony at the Tokaanu Hotel, attended by more than 100 local guests. It is the second year the award ceremony has been held. The Conservation Award was presented to the Taupo District Council in recognition of the excellent effort by the Turangi Tongariro Community Board in establishing a transfer station in Turangi. Paul Green, regional conservator for the Tongariro Taupo Conservancy, said that the Turangi transfer station is an excellent example of what could be done
elsewhere in the Lake Taupo area. Mr Ryan has a long association with conservation in the Tongariro Taupo area. He has served on the Tongariro National ParkBoard, the Lake Taupo Reserves Board and was the immediate past chairperson of the Tongariro Taupo Conservation Board. A spokesperson for the Department of Conservation, Ms Lianne Campbell, said the awards were given annually to acknowledge the contribution made locally to conservation. "We are very pleased with the response from locals to the awards," she said. "We know there are a lot of people concerned about our environment and this is one way the Department can acknowledge their efforts."
