Raetihi's Littlewoods efforts rewarded
Valma and Ray Littlewood were presented the Raetihi Citizenship Award at the annual mayor's Raetihi Senior Citizen's Christmas Dinner last Wednesday. Mayor'Garrick Workman presented the Ruby Parker Candelabra to the Littlewoods. Ray has lived in Raetihi for 81 years and served on the Raetihi Borough Council for 15 years, six as deputy mayor. He is a foundation member of the Rotary service club, has served the RSA and helped with Senior Citizens work. Mr Workman said Valma has spent almost a lifetime serving the Raetihi community. He mentioned her work
with senior citizens, helping people unable to get to the doctor or hospital for visits etc. She has been an active member in the cancer support group. She has also worked through Rotary and both were active in repertory. Ray said although he had "only been in Raetihi 81 years" he had decided he liked the town. "We have enjoyed life here and have never wanted to move away," he said. He said it was only natural to get wrapped up in lots of things wheil they had been here for a long time. He remembered the first swimming class at the pool, and working on shifting 'a lot of soil' working with Mr Sandford, the contractor. Past award recipients have been Win McCarthy, Nancy Winter, Cynthia Binzegger, Ross Journeaux, Jessie Seaman and the Pink Ladies.
