Damaged reserve tree to be felled

A large beech tree which is poised to fall into the Ohakune Motor Camp is to be control-felled. At their meeting last Thursday Waimarino Community Board members approved the application from the Ohakune Motor Camp's lessee, Noel Shepherd, to remove the tree which is on the bank of the Mangateitei Stream. They heard that if the tree falls it could cause considerable damage to the infrastructure of the motor camp's underground services.

The root structure of the red beech has been severely undermined by high water flows in the Mangateitei Stream and now poses more than a possible threat, the board heard. Mr Shepherd' s proposal to control fell the tree onto the opposite bank of the stream where it would cause least damage to both the camping ground lawns and the vegetation within the river reserve was accepted. The timber would be cut up for firewood for local pensioners.
