Police pleased with sober driving
Waimarino Police are pleased with the results of a random stopping and breath testing programme on the weekend. More than 100 cars were stopped and just two failed the breath-alco-hol test. One driver was taken to the station for further testing and was found to be under the limit. The other had their keys taken and driven home. A number of cars had people who had been drinking who were passengers but in almost all cases the driver had not been drinking, said Sgt Stuart Ngatai. He said it was very pleasing that people were enjoying the many pre-Christmas parties in the area without causing problems. • A woman was flown
to Wanganui Base Hospital by helicopter on Friday night after she was knocked unconscious at the Ruapehu Hotel in Raetihi. Police enquiries are continuing into the incident, when four men were fighting in the hotel. The woman either became involved or got in the way and was knocked to the ground, police said. A man was later arrested but released soon after. • A man was taken to hospital Monday morning with cuts and bruises after the car he was driving and a light truck collided on the corner of Rata and Ayr Streets, Ohakune, shortly after 8 am. The car was travelling in a southerly direction along Rata Street across the inter-
section and the truck was travelling east along Ayr Street. The truck was pushed into the Benchmark Building Supplies yard fence. Fire brigade staff were called back to the site to clear oil from the road after the sump of the Peugeot car leaked when the tow truck hoisted the car, ready for removal. • All emergency services were called to Karioi Forest 12.15pm Sunday when an Army Unimog truck failed to negotiate a
bridge and crashed into a stream. The driver of the truck was airlifted by NZ Rail helicopter to Palmerston North hospital. The other occupant of the truck was not injured. • A tanker-load of liquid fertiliser was pumped to another vehicle near Weir's Access on Friday, to avoid the load spilling into the Makotuku Stream which feeds the Raetihi town water supply. The tanker was involved
in an accident, leading to the concern. The driver of the tractor towing the tanker was taken to hospital by NZ Rail rescue helicopter with intemal injuries. The accident happened while driving down a steep incline. The tractor turned over, but the tanker remained on its wheels, but jackknifed. No attempt to move the tractor or the tanker was made until the fertiliser was off-loaded to another tanker, police said.
