Travelling challenges with children

Travelling with children, even on short trips, can be a challenge. If you're travelling by car this summer, plan ahead and take your time. It' s a good idea to stop often along the way , about IO minutes for every hour in the car. Take games like a ball or frisbee to make your stops energetic and fun. In the car, a box of toys and activities on the back seat helps keep children occupied. Try cassettes of favourite songs and stories or have a go at making your own. Games along the way like "I Spy", counting bridges or spotting car colours, following a map or playing word games, help to pass the time. If you have a baby under six months, try to keep to

baby ' s normal sleeping routine and stop for at least an hour for feeding, playing and letting baby explore. Dress comfortably, layers of clothing that can be removed when it warms up are best. Healthy snacks, like small portions of cheese, fruit or raisins, can be rationed out as treats. Try to avoid sweets and chips when travelling. When it' s time to stop for a meal, keep it small and light. It's also important for everyone to take plenty of fluids. Water is best for quenching thirst and it stops you getting too tired. Make sure all children are safely restrained in a car seat at all times. Drive safely and have a great holiday! This advice is supplied by the Plunket Society.
