Eye on Ruapehu College
The Ruapehu College Cultural Group had the privilege of helping to kick-start the 'Older and Bolder' week in the Taihape Town Hall last Sunday. The opening ceremony was part of a week-long celebration in the Ruapehu region promoting the capabilities of our older citizens. Distinguished guests in attendance included the Governor General Dame Catherine Tizard. Ms K Wilson, teacher, said she was extremely pleased with the group' s effort as was the crowd who replied with thunderous applause after the item. The audience was especially touched when the group sang 'E Komako' . This followed an acknowledgment by Mr Cast of the composer, the late Mrs Joan Akapita and her contribution to Maoridom. The school was also involved in a community blood donation scherne with three nurses visiting the college from Good Health Wanganui' s Transfusion Unit. Forty two pints of blood were collected from both teachers and pupils. This week college pupils hope to see a new cricket pitch of artificial turf installed on top of existing grass in the college grounds. The present pitch is becoming dangerously bumpy. Funds will be supplied by the Board of Trustees, the Ohakune Pub Charity Fund and the Hillary Commission. The artificial turf will be laid by members of the Ohakune Cricket Club. With the Round the Mountain Relay looming the college has decided to enter the social grade with a team made up of both students and teachers. The race will take place on 26 November. The final results of quizzes held as part of the annual interwhanau competition are: SCIENCE; 1 Weka; 2 Tui; 3 Huia; 4 Kiwi. MATHS; 1 Kiwi; 2 Weka; 3 Tui; 4 Huia. In the academic arena the school has just produced a course selection booklet, distributed on Wednesday 9 November. Many exciting additions to course choices for next year include Correspondence Japanese and Printmaking (Practical Art). Along with the booklet were subject choice sheets and these must be handed back into the school as soon as pdssible. If there are any queries regarding subject choices, readers are asked to ring the school. Form 5 and 7 reports were taken home on 28 October. Sixth formers have completed their exams and their reports will be issued on 17 November. The Senior Prizegiving will be held on 17 November in the College Hall. The leaving date for Form 5 and 7 students is 17 November and for Form 6, 19 November but Form 5 and 7 students must attend on 5 December to return their books and documentation.
