Art or graffiti in Raetihi?
Local minds recently got on the job and found talent to cover the walls of Raetihi that had been targetted by out-of-towners for tagging. 'Welcome to Raetihi' featuring on the old lawyer' s office and 'streetwise' on the new lawyer's office walls were painted by Jessie Winiata and Kahl Perkins. Although these may not be everyone's cup-of-tea, some say they express talent, liven the atmosphere and have deterred graffiti. Jeremy Nash (Raetihi solicitor) and Brian Moss (Wellington graphic designer) are helping these talented young artists find outlets and direction. John and Billy Ratima's Four Square was next to see a face-lift. Now a snowy mountain peak rising above a bush-clad hill nestles into the landscaped park. This time Jessie Winiata and Kahl Perkins had a helping hand from Vallance Richards and Peter Perkins. There has been positive feed-back to their artwork. Brian Moss wants the shed next to the Four Square painted. Under discussion with Colleen Hanson are Maori designs and motifs on the bilingual unit at Raetihi Primary School.
