2600 runners on the way for Army relay
By Michele Monaghan This is the month all the training will be put in to practice with the 24th Around The Mountains Relay (ATMR) being run on 26 November. While most of the 260 teams entered consist of 10 runners a bit of leeway is allowed for youngsters. Twenty seven Waiouru Primary School pupils will make up one team for this
year's ATMR. Ages range from 8 to 12. The team has been put together and trained by about seven willing parents. Three times a week the team meet to go for their training run. No solo participants have entered this year although two people will run 75km each as a team. Entries were full within a month of being opened and by the time supporters and runners are
taken into account, about 3300 people will converge on Waiouru for the run and function afterwards. About 2600 people will actually take part in the race. The first social runners will leave Waiouru at 2am on 26 November and the next lot will leave. at 3am. Ladies and composite teams depart at 3.30am and the open and veterans will be the last at 4am.
