River rules extended

The Whanganui River Control Bylaws were to be revoked on 1 October 1993 however amendments to the Resource Management Act have now extended these Bylaws until 1 October 1996 when it is expected that the Harbours Act, which is presently under review, will come into force.

An invitation was extended to the local Iwi Group and representatives of the Whanganui Commercial Operators Association to attend a meeting on 26 October 1994 to discuss the implementation of these Bylaws over the coming summer season. Commercial vessels and operators based in the Ruapehu District are required to be licensed which will ensijre a suitable standard in respect of public tourist safety throughout the Ruapehu District. MonitOring of the river will be undertaken and legal proceedings will be initiated for those operators remaining unlicensed, the council has advised. Visitor Information Centres within the District will be able to advise river tourists on which operators are appropriately licensed, according to council.
