Postbank to leave southern Ruapehu

By

Michele

Monaghan

Waiouru Postbank is to close its doors permanently after 2 December, leaving the southern Ruapehu district with no Postbank branch at all. Robin Taylor, spokesman from ANZ / Postbank in Wellington, said that the Waiouru Postbank was not a viable operation in terms of business volumes. Mr Taylor said that staff would be talking to customers about alternati ve banking arrangements including the use of Eftpos, ATM's and telephone banking. He said that obviously they would have to expect to lose some business due to the closure.

The Waiouru Post Office is used by customers from Raetihi and Ohakune since those branches were closed a number of years ago. With the closure of Postbank Waiouru the next closest branches are Taihape, Turangi and Taumarunui. Second bank gone The Waiouru community will lose its second bank in as many years with the closure of Postbank Waiouru. The BNZ pulled out of Waiouru about two years ago. However Westpac believed a branch in Waiouru was viable, so they opened shortly after the departure of the BNZ.
