Scenic bike race to repeat

Another great ride through the wild and scenic Tongariro Forest has been organised by Rock Hard Mountain Bikes Tours of National Park. The Skotel Forest Crossing Mountain Bike Race is scheduled for Sunday 13 November 1994. Promoted as a wilderness event, rac.e organiser Maxine Parker says the race is aimed at "fitness fanatics, expert riders and the lunatic fringe". The 56km race starts at the Skotel on Mt Ruapehu and includes 14km of tarseal before hitting the 42 Traverse route through the forest. A mixture of gravel, 4WD and single tracks, the course includes several

river crossings and some challenging terrain along the way. First held in November 1993, the event attracted a field of 175 riders and was won by Hamilton' s Karl Bain in a fast time of 2hrs 18mins. The first women home was Debbie Jaine of Taupo in 3hrs 06mins. The race is some 3km shorter this year and Ms Parker is expecting some strong competition in the quest for victory. Limited to 200 entries, demand has been strong. Entries close on 6 November after which a late fee penalty is incurred. For information contact Maxine Parker 07 892 2938 fax 07 892 2809
