Rangataua identity leaves landmark house
Well-known Rangataua resident Connie Phillips mo ved out of her house last week after being resident forsome53 years. Bornnear the old church in Rangataua, Connie is the oldest remaining resident in Rangataua. Seventeen of Connie' s children were born in her house which, according to Connie, "must be over a hundred years old if it's a day." The future of the old Rangataua guest house is uncertain since the council has deemed it unsafe for habitation. Earlier this year
Connie fractured some bones in her knee whilst fetching wood from the outside woodshed. Her injury resulted in her being hospitalised for a month. During her stay in hospital her house was broken into and electrical goods amongst other items stolen. "I'm not too happy about moving out, but don't really mind as my new place in Raetihi is warmer and there are lots of gardens to be looked after," said Connie. Already Connie has had Turn to Page 2
Rangataua house move
FROMPAGEl people popping in with offers to rent or buy the house. According to family it's taken over two weeks to move Connie's things out of the house and it's quite a challenge finding space to fit everything into a onebedroom house. Among items to be moved were Connie's well known collection of salt and pepper shakers. For the move there have been plenty helping hands from Connie's children, 80 grand children and 50 great-grand children.
