Report from Ruapehu College: Education outside the classroom has featured in the past fortnightat Ruapehu College. Withinaweek Link Course students had sculpted pieces of ancient rimu into beautifully turned bowls and urns under the watchful eyes of local tutors at Paul Beckett's Rangataua workshop. Several students, Brad Taituma among them, impressed for the quality of the woodturning which was achieved after a relatively short period of tuition. At the same time another group headed off to Taranaki Polytechnic's Computer Assisted Design course which has become a feature of senior Graphics at college. For Mr P McNaughton, an army retiree who led the group, this was a satisfying way to end his introductory course to teaching. On Thursday Mrs Parker with Mrs Buck walked sixth form Biology students along the Mangawhero and Rimu tracks as they carried out native bush transects and habitat studies. Community connections Student volunteers collected for the Plunket Appeal in Raetihi; The Pulp and Paper Workers' Union generous donation of over $ 1 200 will be used to buy a camera badly needed by art and media students; Through the School Connection programme, Telecom and 70 families in the community are contributing 5 per cent of toll bills to the school and this total has now reached $1300 for spending on school projects. If readers would like to join the scheme they are asked to phone 3858398. Academic Six students gained credits in the recent Australian Mathematics Competition. They are S Smith, C Hamilton, V Duigan, D Forster, S Lind, S Sue and E Voon. D Forster received a special achievement award for the best Ruapehu College standardised score. Sport Weka again won the inter- whanau skiing with Tui third after Kiwi. Fastest times on the day went to T Haywood and K Mcllroy. The indoor soccer team Damage Incorporated which includes several college players has won the Waimarino United AFC and Powderkeg trophies. In a closely fought netball challenge Form 7 narrowly lost to Staff by 7 goals to 6 to retain the Wooden Spoon. Staffing Economics teacher and sporting personality, Mr R Lindsay, will be leaving for Palmerston North Boys' High School in the new year after five years at Ruapehu College.
