Kindergarten strike view
• Kindergarten teachers went on strike Thursday 13 October 1994. Central to the strike was the issue of inadequate Government funding. The results of this are kindergartens facing a funding crisis with growing deficits and quality education increasingly at risk. Many kindergartens now have 45 children per session to generate more funding - but too many for quality education. Standards are declining as kindergartens put off property maintenance. Closures are inevitable: already two kindergartens have closed nationally. Kindergarten teachers have faced significantly increased workloads since the introduction of "Before Five." The government has refused, thus far, to any addition/ funding unless the union agrees to untrained staff being employed and parents paying compulsory fees. Kindergartens as we now know them are at risk. Who will make a stand for our children? Yvonne Triggell, Sharon Wilton, Ohakune Kindergarten; Sue Kumera, Cindy Hammond, Weir Terrace Kindergarten Waiouru; Margie Dennehy, Kenningston St Kindergarten Waiouru
