Waimarino hockey

Of the 18 girls trained during the few weeks before the school holidays, only 1 2 were available for the Wanganui school-girls tournament on 5-7 September. On Monday 5 September the girls travelled to W anganui for the first game against South Taranaki. This was a good game and all the girls performed well,

putting into practice what they had learnt The player-of-the-game was Tania Shields and the score was 0-4 to South Taranaki. The game against Wanganui B saw two very even sides, mostly all new players. There were lots of opportunities to score but neither side followed through although the girls came to grips with the concept of the game a lot better. The player-of-the-game was Angela Fraser. The girls took time out to relax at the 'Splash Centre' after their first day of real hockey. On Tuesday 6 September a well-controlled game was played against Wanganui A. There was a good effort from the team and they never gave up. At half time goalies were swapped and Casey was able to have a well-earned rest whilst watching the Wanganui goalie's movements. Player of the game was Mary Bishop and the score was 0-11 loss. A good positional game of hockey was played against Counties. The girls trapped and marked extremely well and five minutes out from half-time the score was nil-all. Counties experience finally took its toll and the final score was 7-nil. The player-of-the-game was Casey Scarrow. This day finished with tea at the 'Pizza Huf and then back to the motel for a spa and to attend to the

bruises and grazes. Wednesday 7 September was the only game of the tournament that no-one enjoyed. It was played against Rangitikei and was very wet and cold. Neither team played to their potential and the score was 0-2 loss. Player-of-the-game was Hayley Mckay. A short prize-giving was held and the Wanganui Association presented fairplay awards to one member of each team. Waimarino's fair-play award went .to Angela Fraser. The coaches of Waimarino hockey were very impressed with the behaviour of the girls both on and off the field and sincere thanks were extended to all who helped and assisted especially to Ruapehu College for use of the gymnasium, mini-bus and hockey equipment, Ohakune Primary for balls, sticks and skirts, Raetihi Primary for sticks, all schools for allowing the girls to participate and to the ladies who gave up their time to transport and coach the girls.
