Fire, snow closes Desert Road

The Desert road was briefly closed on Thursday morning due to a car catching fire 8km North of Waiouru. The two occupants of the car were not hurt although the car was completely gutted. A fireman who attended the scene said because of the heat of the fire the LPG cylinder started "venting out", meaning the valve on the cylinder collapsed allow-

ing LPG to escape, hence the closure of the Desert Road. The cause of the fire was unknown at the time the Bulletin went to print. Meanwhile, snow on Friday morning closed the Desert Road. About 10cm of snow fell at Waiouru but soon melted. More snow on Friday night kept the road closed, until Saturday, 12.30pm.
