Logging traffic problems surface
The proposed Rochfort Park bypass should be an item of district-wide importance, according to councillor John Compton. The bypass was the subject of a submission to the recent ward tour by councillors and officers. The bypass, which would take traffic from OhakuneRaetihi road directly across to State Highway 49 near the Big Carrot, is seen as necessary to cope with the expected increase in logging truck traffic from W aimarino Forest west of Raetihi to the Winstone
Pulp International Ltd at Karioi. It is seen as undesirable for large numbers of trucks to have to negotiate the Ohakune Raetihi Road - Clyde Street intersection. Cr Bob Peck said the implications of the increased logging traffic spread wider and that Seddon Street, Raetihi, residents had approached him, concerned that more logging trucks would be travelling along the street. He said people live almost on the road at the Pipiriki entrance to Raetihi and that there were concerns
about children getting on and off busses and for older people using the street. It had been suggested that Raetihi too would need a bypass.
Board chairman Colin Webb said Ohakune' s case was different as it had State Highway truck traffic passing through its streets "all the time".
