Mayoral chain missing

In June 1994 the Waimarino Museum in Raetihi was broken into and amongst items missing is the Raetihi Mayoral Chain. The chain was last worn in January 1993 at the Raetihi Centennial, and was thereafter presented to the museum for display and safe-keeping. The chain was only recently discovered to be missing as it was stored in a case awaiting the arrival of a suitable display cabinet. The case was not removed in the robbery. According to Ruapehu mayor Garrick Workman it is no longer appropriate that the chain be worn since the mayor now represents the whole Ruapehu region. He said the Raetihi chain belongs to the people of Raetihi and it is only correct that it be on display in the museum. The chain has no great commercial value but is an important part of the town's history. "I am sad and disillusioned by the theft of the chain, and appeal to the public for information or its return," said Mr Workman who has served the community as Mayor for eleven years. Mr Workman can be contacted on 06-3858 248 with any information regarding the chain. Any information or the return of the chain would be treated in confidence, he said.
