Council sorry for state of water
The Ruapehu District Council has appologised for the state of the Ohakune water. In reply to a letter to the editor, council officer Peter Jackson provided the following: During the inclement weather that occurred in September and the flrst week of October, the Ohakune Water Treatment Plant experienced unusually cloudy (turbid) water and that containing high organic colour. These weather conditions make it difficult to guarantee effective treatment with an ultraviolet light (UV) disinfection plant, so in the interest of public health chlorination of the supply was introduced on a number of occasions. Starting and stopping chlorination can gi ve rise to taste and odour in the treated water. Council apologises for the inconvenience but is pleased to advise that the plant is now back on UV treatment and has been so over the past week.
