Boarders deny drink race claim

The recent Triple Challenge snowboarder competition was not decided on a drinking race, according to the organiser. The Bulletin received a complaint (see letter above) from a parent of two teenage entrants in the event, held at Turoa recently, that the boardercross event which was to be held on the third day, was decided by a drinking race in the Ohakune Hotel. The parent told the Bulletin she was upset that the organisers should be promoting excessive drinking, but also that as

her two sons had paid an entry fee for the event but had no chance of competing as they were under age but also that she did not want them competing in drinking races. However the organiser told the Bulletin that the boardercross was not decided by a drinking race. He said entry fees for the event had been refunded and that some of the competitors had chosen to organise their own drinking races at the hotel. Some of the alcohol used was from one of the sponsors of the Triple Challenge, but the organiser said any drinking racing was not part of the organised event.
