Snowboard comp one of the biggest

The Triple Challenge snowboarding event held at Turoa 8 - 9 October, with over 80 competitors registered for the event, was the second largest snowboard competition to be held in New Zealand. Most of the top riders from around New Zealand were present with many making the long trip north from the South Island fields. The competition was supposed to consist of three events; the slalom on Saturday, the halfpipe on Sunday and the boardercross on Monday. Unfortunately the good weather of the weekend did not hold out and the boardercross event was cancelled. Consequently overall placings were calculated on two events. First place overall was won in the mens division by Graham Dunbar (NZ champion in 1993 and runner up in '94). In the womens division first place went to newcomer from Auckland, Kirsty Barwick. The mens slalom event was won by Thomas Jones (1994 national giant slalom champion). Penelope Underwood (2nd overall in New Zealand womens snowboarding) won the womens slalom. The halfpipe event was won by Olly Brunton ('94 New Zealand mens halfpipe champion). A contestant from the United States, Angela Tetrault narrowly won the womens halfpipe. Prize-giving took place in Ohakune at the Hot Lava Nightclub where over $8000 in prizes were given away. The three main sponsors of the events were HOT snowboards, Killer Loop sunglasses and Brightstone cider. _ Results: Overall mens: 1 st Graham Dunbar, 2nd Stephen Scott, 3rd Quntin Robbins. Overall womens: lst Kirsty Barwick, 2nd Angela Tetrault, 3rd Victoria Newman. Mens slalom: 1 st Thomas Jones, 2nd Chris Vile, 3rd Marc Begg. Womens slalom: lst Penelope Underwood, 2nd Kirsty Barwick, 3rd Viki Course, Mens Halfpipe: 1 st Olly Brunton, 2nd Aaron Webb, 3rd Quentin Robbins. Womens halfpipe: lst Angela Tetrault, 2nd Kirsty Barwick, 3rd Ylona McGinity.
