Snowboard challenge
Whakapapa' s first ever snowboard competition, the F2/Brightstone Cider Challenge, was held at Whakapapa Ski Area this weekend. The competition consisted of a Dual Slalom, Terrain Park combined with a Half Pipe and a Boardercross. All the competitors were unanimous in their praise of the event. Graham Dunbar founder of the New Zealand Snowboard Association and 1 993 New Zealand Snowboard champion said he was, "impressed with Whakapapa' s willingness to support snowboarding which is. New Zealand' s fastest growing winter sport." The competition was competed for by
New Zealand' s top riders as well as by US A and Australian competitors. John Malcom Smith and Nikki Vanschynet were the winners of the half pipe and terrain park and they scored highly for style and for gaining big air when jumping. Aron Mclntyre and Nicole Campbell won the mens and women' s boardercross respectively and Thomas Jones and Penelope Underwood won the Slalom. Results: Boardercross - Men, 1 st Aron Mclntrye, 2nd John Malcolm Smith, 3rd Jimmi Hunt, Women, 1st Nicole Campbell, 2nd Penelope Underwood, 3rd Vickie Course; Slalom - Men, 1st Thomas Jones, 2nd Chris Vile, 3rd Graham Dunbar, Women, 1st Penelope Underwood, 2nd Louisa Muir, 3rd Vickie Course; Half Pipe and Terrain Park - Men, 1 st John Malcolm Smith. 2nd Graham Dunbar. 3rd Steve Scott, Women, 1st Nikki Vanschynet, 2nd Vickie Course, 3rd Victoria Newman.
