Ruapehu college report
A window of fine weather opened briefly Wednesday morning, 28 September allowing the annual Ruapehu College cross-country to be completed. Competitors ran a new course this year designed by PE head, Mrs K Campbell. With a bias toward more road running, the course in its sodden condition was best suited to runners from Tui Whanau which took first place overall ahead of Kiwi, Weka and Huiain that order. Weka harriers may have been slower but turned out in the greatest numbers to participate. First home were: Junior Girls 1st equal Janelle Martin and Sarah Mackay, Margaret Mowat and Donna Cranston. Junior Boys 1st Justin Mackay, Campbell Crossan 2nd, Robert Tapa 3rd. Intermediate Girls 1 st= Dorothy Kyle and Tania Clark, Cathy Cranston 3rd. Intermediate Boys 1st Andrew Murdie, Lindsay Cast 2nd, Deevon Gray 3rd. Senior Girls 1st Tina Bishop, Raema Mowat 2nd, Denise Waerea 3rd. Senior Boys Scott Goldfinch lst, Aeneas O'Sullivan 2nd, William Sutton 3rd New Look Students in art options have been inspired to brighten up drab corridor areas of the school, such as Lab B and the typing room, which are now characterised with bright graphics. Art students have also acted on a School Council initiative and produced an array of designer-painted rubbish bins. It is hoped that these attractive bins will also attract more rubbish. Drawings in pencil and paint are on
display in the front of the school and are well worth a look. Three weeks in brief Mathex success at last: One of the college Mathex teams, comprising Joanne Barclay, Daniel Forster, Danielle Rodger and Shannon Vartha, won the sixth form grade at the regional competition held recently in Wanganui where over a dozen schools from around the region were competing. For those who missed the skiing news, Todd Hay wood, Daniel Richards, Shanon Hays, Darren Triggell, and Kaye Murdie achieved second place for Ruapehu College in the 1 994 New Zealand Secondary Schools Skiing Championships. Had it not been for bad weather causing Day Two to be cancelled, it was generally felt that the Ruapehu skiers would have gone on to win the event from St Cuthbert's. Todd Haywood emerged as the country ' s fastest senior secondary school male skier. Lunchtime Sport: The Student Council and Aeneas O'Sullivan inparticular are to be congratulated for organising a highly enjoyable inter-hapu, indoor soccer competition. Weka SB entered the final after beating Huia BC. The other finalist will be decided when Kiwi RM plays Tui CC. Musical Buddy: A group of theatre-goers travelled to Wellington with Mr and Mrs Buck and Mrs Knight to enjoy a matinee performance of the Buddy Holly musical. Anti-Smoking: Smokefree personnel and local health workers are involved with a group of students raising awareness of the health and financial costs of smoking. Exams: Fifth and Seventh formers began internal examinations on Thursday 6 October.
