Public provide work ideas for council

Fixing Ohakune' s Shannon Street drains, better Ohakune Junction parking, removal of gum trees, shopping centre access, Pipiriki township development, washing facilities for stock trucks and various road works including a heavyvehicle bypass are some of the public submissions to the 1994-95 annual plan to be considered by the Waimarino Community Board at their next meeting. The board considered a list of the submissions and concerns from a recent ward tour and indicated ones they wished to have cost estimates calculated. Ohakune concerns A group of Rimu Street residents called for the removal of two large gum trees on council reserve above the Junction, which tower over their residential properties Safety of Shannon Street' s drains were of concern to 1 8 people who put in submissions, who thought the drain in its present state was a danger to traffic and to young children. New public toilets and increased parking at Ohakune Junction were suggested, as was improved lighting, a road safety chevron board at the Rimu St end of Miro Street, and

reduced liquor licensing hours. Kerb and channelling for Martin Place is the aim of one resident there, and a group of Miro and Goldfinch Street residents called for improvement to a public drain between properties on the two streets. "At present several properties are being flooded due to the lack of maintenance and that a motel complex has been allowed by the previous Ohakune Borough Council to be constructed without the provision for adequate stormwater discharge," stated area engineer Don Sattler in his report on the submissions. Access for the rear of the Ohakune Shopping Centre block is to be considered (see separate story). A footpath extension to the pensioner flats in Moore Street was requested. Raetihi concerns Upgrading of the bridge access to properties east of Raetihi was requested by Mark Cribb. The council is to ask Mr Cribb for "an update on future developments which may take place in this area and could determine the future Turn to Page 8

FROMPAGE7 need for services". Extending the seal on Ameku Road was requested, with the submitter, Craig Ryland, offering to plant the reserve at the end of the road. The Makotuku Bridge on the Raetihi-Ohakune Road was of concern, especially in light of the expected increased logging truck traffic. Local trucking firm B arrett and T aura requested funds to upgrade their truck washing facilities, which were used by many other operators including -the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries "who recognised this site as a central Waimarino washing facility in the case of some animal disease outbreak." They also requested sealing the entrance to the Raetihi dump; provision of an effluent dump for stock truck andtrailerunits' holding tanks.

Rural concerns Concerns about road works and maintenance on Ohura, Makakahi, Ruatiti and Pukekaha roads were expressed. The mayor has been asked to express the concerns to the relevant staff. A request for a playground at Pipiriki next to the Pipirijd/Raetihi Road was put forward, as were concerns about how the proposed rubbish transfer station would be set up. Of concern was the state of Ratamaire Road, near Rangataua, and the increased use of the clay (gated) section of the road by mountain bike riders and vehicular traffic, with the suggestion that this section of the road be re-established "even though it has not been effectively closed". Another date for a meeting with Rangataua residents was to be arranged as the council tour party ran out of time to meet them.
