Carrot colour cleverness Ohakune shop access
land swap offered
An offer to swap land with the council so that it can establish a right-of-way for commercial traffic to the backs of Ohakune shops was put to the Waimarino Community Board last week. The right-of-way has been suggested by the Mainstreet group as a way to ease congestion on Goldfinch Street by providing access for delivery trucks, couriers and for staff access to shops in the Goldfinch, Clyde, Ayr streets block. The access would be to and from Ayr Street. Accountant Bill Peach put the proposal to the board during its di scussions on council annual plan submissions, to hand over a strip of land to the council for the access, in return for freehold title to a block the group currently leases from the council on a 'Glasgow Lease'.
Mr Peach told the board he was acting in his capacity as an advisor and minor shareholder of the Ohakune Shopping Centre group. He said the group had plans to develop the site some time in the future and that they would be happy to work with the council to decide the best line for the access way. He said the present lease on the group' s land was virtually the same as freehold as it was just $10-$ 15 per year in rent and was for 99 years with a right of renewal. Board member John Compton said the access way would be of benefit to the other landowners and suggested that they could contribute to the cost of developing the access. The move would help to solve the congestion problem in Goldfinch Street, said member Ellen Gould in support.
