Manganui a Te Ao co-operation needed

Many anglers who fished the Manganui a Te Ao last season were effectively trespassing in that they failed to gain permission to cross private land, according to the local game council. "Anglers must realise that while the strip of land immediately adjacent to the Manganui a Te Ao River is generally in public ownership, access to this strip from the road is often across private farmland," said a Taranaki Fish and Game Council •representative. "Landowners along the river from Ruatiti Domain to Hoihenga are favourably disposed toward anglers but if the events of last summer continue, there is a real possibility that some will consider denying access.

"Landowners had to contend with

cars parked in front of gates, gates

left open, families picnicking

in the middle of paddocks

without asking, and

evenacase where

an angler re-

fused to

buc fep

from a stock crossing when it was about to be used." To maintain good landowner relations, anglers must ask permission to cross private land, says the council. The Ruapehu Fish and Game Club will be erecting a large map at the entrance to Ruatiti Dnmain which will show farm ^

boundaries and where anglers can

seek permission. The club will

also erect at least seven

stile.s along the river

to prevent dam-

ageto fences.
